Simon Jackson Sailing the Ice (own label no cat. no.) First solo disc from leader of the eclectic Tangata gang. An engrossing selection of songs and satisfyingly virtuoso self-penned instrumentals (influences from Renbourn and Martyn to flamenco). The songs include a Carthyesque trad. arr, some thoughtful covers and respectable originals. Classy help from Beth Noble and Steafan Hannigan, among others. www.SimonGuitar.co.uk |

"Finally, if you like the idea of mixing the complex, largely un-foot-tappable rhythms of Bulgarian music with English and Irish roots, there's the highly eclectic Nottingham quintet tangata whose Kick the Bucket [self-released (2007)] is a wild and very entertaining spin from the North Atlantic to the Black Sea. The title track features a throbbing accordion dancing circles around a fiddle, while the "Oakwood Stomp" set sounds like an English country dance tune pumped up with a Balkan beat. Even the traditional song "My Johnny Was a Shoemaker" gets the accordion beatbox treatment with an Eastern European digression in the middle, although the band also offers a more rhythmically conventional and wonderfully harmonious version of "Spencer the Rover." Well-played and very creative stuff.
